Miss Fisher And The Crypt Of Tears is a feature-length adventure that’s a continuation of the 2012-15 Australian series Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries; the show is not only one of Acorn TV’s most popular series, but one of the most popular Australian series ever. The series itself is based on the Miss Fisher novels by Kerry Greenwood. It’s not hard to see why Miss Fisher is so popular, given Essie Davis’ confident performance as the title character. But does a Miss Fisher feature film work? MISS FISHER AND THE CRYPT OF TEARS: STREAM IT OR SKIP IT? The Gist: The story picks up in Palestine in 1929. Miss Phryne Fisher (Essie Davis) is in Jerusalem to find Shirin Abbas (Izabella Yena), the niece of Sheikh Kahlil Abbas (Kal Nagas), and have her join her uncle in England, where things are safer for her. She finds out from Professor Linnaeus (John Waters), an archaeologist that gives her inside information, that she’s being held in jail for distributing anti-British propaganda. After deftly escaping the clutches of Scotland Yard’s Inspector Vincent Montague (Ian Bliss), she sets off to rescue Shirin. The rescue involves a donkey, chases through marketplaces, and hopping on the roof of a speeding train. When it seems that Miss Fisher is the victim of a run-in with the ceiling of a tunnel, word about her death gets back to her native Australia. There, her companion Dot Collins (Ashleigh Cummings) tearfully finds Miss Fisher’s longtime (and reluctant) investigative partner, Detective Inspector Jack Robinson (Nathan Page). He decides to take the long journey to London, where a memorial service is being held at the Lofthouse estate. He’s ready to give a tearful eulogy when a plane swoops down and lands on the grounds. In it is none other than Miss Fisher. Shirin, now safe with her uncle, insists that when she was a child, two men came to her village and killed everyone in it, and her mother went missing, part of a curse that has plagued her tribe since a massive emerald was stolen from The Crypt of Tears. She wants Miss Fisher to find out what happened and to break the curse if possible. The first thing is to meet the man Shirin calls her “guardian angel, ” who wants to put things right. Miss Fisher, using her powers of persuasion, gets the understandably annoyed DI Robinson to help her. When they meet the “guardian angel”, he gets shot, and they find out that he was a British soldier. He also has a necklace that holds a brilliant emerald. That’s the start of a mystery that has a few murders, al brotherly rivalry between Jonathan Lofthouse (Rupert Penry-Jones) and his brother “Lofty” Lofthouse (Daniel Lapaine) and a spectacular trip back to the Palestinian desert to find the Crypt of Tears. Photo: Acorn TV What Movies Will It Remind You Of? : This movie is very much in the vibe of the Indiana Jones series, most specifically Raiders of the Lost Ark, and it evokes the same feel that Raiders did, which was a modern take on 1930s and ’40s adventure films. Performance Worth Watching: Essie Davis has been playing Phryne Fisher on and off for eight years, so she knows her way around the character well. She’a a modern woman of the Roaring Twenties, able to chase down bad guys without help from anyone (including men), but also knows how to use her looks to her advantage. Davis shows that confidence in every scene. Memorable Dialogue: “You know the quickest way to escape me? ” Miss Fisher tells DI Robinson. “Tie you up and dump you in that river? ” he replies. “Or, you can help me with this case, ” she says. Sex and Skin: When Robinson takes off his shirt to rescue Miss Fisher from quicksand, she falls on top of his bare-chested body. Remember, this is a take on an old-fashioned adventure, when the sexiest thing anybody does is kiss. Our Take: One thing that we can say for sure about Miss Fisher And The Crypt Of Tears is that writer Deb Cox and director Tony Tilse have combined to make a visually stunning film, from Miss Fisher’s gorgeous flapper-adjacent costumes — ones that seem to be functional even when she’s running after thieves or climbing through windows — to the location shots in both Australia (subbing for England) and Morocco (subbing for Palestine). And the look and feel of the film does a fine job evoking the popcorn adventure films of the 1930s and ’40s. The story, however, is a bit flabby for such a film. If you haven’t watched Miss Fisher’s Mysteries and this is your first exposure to the character, you likely won’t be too lost; it was smart of Cox to set the film away from Melbourne, where the series was set, and have her deal with a (mostly) new set of characters. You might be a bit confused about her sexy-but-tense relationship with DI Robinson, given the hurt he projects when he sees that she’s alive and well, and all the times that they hovered about two inches from each other, ready to smooch at any second (social distancing doesn’t work for old-fashioned romances). They have the same level of banter that you might have seen between Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn, and that same level of smoldering, unresolved desires between them. Those scenes are understandably the best in the film, given the history the two characters have. But the rest of the story takes time to get going. It’s not a traditional mystery, more like a mystery wrapped inside a treasure-hunt adventure, and the energy of the story ebbs and flows a bit too much for our tastes. There are too many sections of the film, especially in its first hour, where there are a lot of aristocrats talking to each other in the way aristocrats do, not moving the story or the action along particularly well. We don’t even really know where the story is going until about a half-hour into the film, when Shirin tells Miss Fisher about her guardian angel. Between Miss Fisher’s daring rescue of Shirin and the guardian angel moment, there’s a ton of exposition and dialogue, but not a lot about who everyone is. We also see a lot of the butler Crippins (John Stanton), but we’re not sure why. Things only get going when the chases start and people start getting killed, and a film in this vein should have a more even distribution of action. Our Call: STREAM IT. Despite the film’s slow pace, Miss Fisher And The Crypt Of Tears is still watchable because of Davis’ assured performance, the tension between Miss Fisher and DI Robinson, and the spectacular costumes and locales. And, once the adventure aspect of the film picks up, it’s a fun ride until the end. Ending up in bed with a guy, while she assumed that very man was still engaged to another woman is the most disgusting they could make her do for the series.
